OpenAI API credits news cover with Sam Altman and the OpenAI mark

OpenAI API credits are now part of a ChatGPT subscription. On October 28, OpenAI announced that eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers can claim up to $500 a month in free API credits "to build apps and agents". The details are in OpenAI's guide, API credits for ChatGPT subscribers, and the launch post is on @OpenAIDevs.

For anyone who has wanted to build an agent but stopped at the API bill, this removes the first excuse. Here is what you get, what it does not cover, and what it means for the forms your agent builds.

What OpenAI announced

The amount depends on the plan. For example, according to OpenAI's guide:

Plan Monthly API credits
Pro ($100 tier) $100
Pro ($200 tier) $200
Pro ($500 tier) $500
Business Standard $20 per paid seat
Business Premium $100 per paid seat

Business credits are pooled across the workspace and capped at $500 a month. To claim them, first link an API organization you own, from ChatGPT billing settings or from the API Platform. The subscription has to be at least seven days old, and your ChatGPT and API accounts must use the same email.

What the OpenAI API credits cover, and what they do not

In practice, the OpenAI API credits pay for API Platform usage on the linked organization. That includes the Responses API, the Agents API (with hosted sandbox charges), the Decisions API, Realtime, Images and the built-in tools such as web search and file search.

There are three limits worth knowing:

  • They expire every cycle. Unused credits do not roll over to the next month.
  • They do not cover Codex through API keys. OpenAI says that use "is not supported by this benefit".
  • They do not raise ChatGPT limits. The credits are for the API, not for your chat usage.

In short, this is a monthly budget for building, not a discount on what you already do in ChatGPT.

What it means for the forms your agent builds

Until now, a side project agent had two costs: the model and every tool it needed. The model just got a free monthly budget for many builders. So the question becomes which tools an agent can use without adding a new bill.

Forms are a good example, because almost every useful agent collects answers. An agent that qualifies leads, screens candidates or runs an intake needs somewhere to collect answers. It also needs to read them back with a score. dForms is the form builder for AI agents, and it is free with unlimited responses. An agent built on the API can create, publish and read forms with one dForms API key. As a result, the whole loop, from question to scored answer, can run inside those monthly credits.

There is a second effect. Cheaper agents mean more agents filling out forms, not only building them. We covered that shift when GPT-6.1 Terra brought computer use down in price. Forms that an agent can read cleanly, with clear questions and scored options, will work better on both sides.

Try it with dForms

Create an API key on the dForms Developers page, give it to your agent, and paste this as its first task:

Using the dForms API, create a form called "Beta waitlist" with:
work email, company website, team size (1 / 2 to 10 / 11 to 50 / 50+),
and what they want to automate (open text).
Give the team size options points (bigger teams score higher).
Leave it as a draft, then send me the preview link.

Your agent builds the form, the points and the logic, and it can read every response with its score once you publish. For the full setup, read the AI form generator guide.

Frequently asked questions

Who can claim the OpenAI API credits?

Owners of a paid ChatGPT Pro or Business subscription can claim them. The subscription must be at least seven days old, and they must own the API organization that receives the credits. Free trials and complimentary subscriptions do not qualify.

Do the credits roll over?

No. Unused OpenAI API credits expire at the end of each billing cycle, and the first grant is prorated for the rest of the current cycle.

Can an agent built with these credits use dForms?

Yes. dForms is free, and an agent can create, publish and read forms with a dForms API key, so the credits cover the model while the forms cost nothing.
